Groningen – At the Nassau pond in the Oranjebuurt, vandalism has been committed in recent days. A photo posted on social media shows that a small wall of the pond has been kicked over.
“We are deeply offended that this has happened,” the neighborhood association said. “But at the same time we are not surprised. We know that young people have been hanging around the pond for quite some time now. This has often led to destruction. In December, in the run-up to Christmas, we put up a Christmas tree with lights. It was destroyed pretty quickly. And at King’s Day we held our hearts. We build everything up the night before the holiday, and we were afraid that there would be destruction. Fortunately, that did not happen.”
The Nassau pond was designed in 1925 by municipal architect SJ Bouma. It consists of a pond surrounded by stately stairs, seating areas and symmetrically laid out greenery. “It’s great that people sit there. But that things happen that can’t stand the light of day… just keep your fingers off other people’s stuff. In that respect, it would also be very nice if boas or police officers would drive by here more often. To monitor more.” The residents’ association also hopes that the damage will be repaired quickly.
