Nutanix unifies data services for hybrid multicloud environments

Nutanix Announces Data Services for Kubernetes and Cross-Cloud Data Mobility

Nutanix, the leader in hybrid multicloud computing, announces new capabilities in the Nutanix Cloud Platform. It enables customers to integrate data management from containerized and virtualized applications on-premises, in the public cloud, and at the edge. This also includes comprehensive data services for Kubernetes applications and cross-cloud data mobility.

According to IDC, by 2025 there will be 750 million new logical applications, all generating large amounts of data in clouds*. That is why it is essential that organizations integrate data management for containerized and virtualized applications and across multiple environments.

“According to the Enterprise Cloud Index, almost all organizations now use Kubernetes for their containerized applications. Now IT teams must find a way to both provide self-service data services to their developers while ensuring that governance and security policies are applied uniformly,” said Thomas Cornely, SVP, Product Management at Nutanix. “With Nutanix Data Services for Kubernetes, the Nutanix Cloud Platform extends storage provisioning, snapshots, and disaster recovery operations to Kubernetes applications to help accelerate the development of containerized applications in organizations.”

Data services for Kubernetes

Currently, developers and administrators are faced with gaps and complexity for stateful Kubernetes applications, requiring multiple third-party tools or complex do-it-yourself projects to resolve the application and namespace layers. Nutanix Data Services for Kubernetes (NDK), announced today, gives customers control over cloud-native apps and data at scale.

NDK will initially be delivered as part of Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI), bringing Nutanix’s enterprise class storage, snapshots and disaster recovery to Kubernetes. This will help accelerate containerized application development for stateful workloads by introducing storage provisioning, snapshots, and disaster recovery operations for Kubernetes pods and application namespaces. NDK gives Kubernetes developers self-service capabilities for managing storage and data services. IT simultaneously maintains visibility and governance over usage. In addition, NDK represents the latest use case of the integration between Red Hat OpenShift and Nutanix Cloud Platform.

“Application modernization is an important part of our digital transformation journey to continuously deliver a better experience to our customers,” said Yongju Jo, Chief Manager, IDC Business Dept, Shinsegae. “We believe Nutanix Data Services for Kubernetes has great potential to deliver simplified enterprise-grade storage provisioning, snapshots, and disaster recovery for our Kubernetes deployments.”

Cross-cloud data mobility

Nutanix has also introduced MultiCloud Snapshot Technology (MST) to deliver cross-cloud data mobility. MST extends Nutanix’ hybrid multicloud data services by enabling snapshots directly to cloud native object stores, starting with the AWS S3 object storage service. This provides hybrid multi-cloud data protection, recovery and mobility use cases, such as the ability to seamlessly protect and migrate stateful Kubernetes applications and data across cloud infrastructures with NDK leveraging this technology.

MST will enable several use cases including:

  • Disaster recovery and backup for both containerized and virtualized applications

  • The ability to take a snapshot and restore it instantly from anywhere

  • Cross cloud data migration

  • The ability to share data for workflows such as test/dev

  • Long term retention for compliance.

MST will also help many customers manage the cost of their primary infrastructure, enabling them to easily save snapshots to a less expensive storage medium and restore them just as easily, in any infrastructure – private or public cloud.

In addition to these new capabilities, the Nutanix Objects Storage solution now integrates with Snowflake, enabling organizations to use Snowflake Data Cloud to analyze data directly on Nutanix Objects Storage, keeping data local, accelerating time-to-value, and accelerating insights. A single namespace simplifies access to globally distributed data.

NDK and MST are still being developed. The Nutanix Objects Storage and Snowflake integration is currently available to customers. For more information, visit: https://www.nutanix.com/blog/nutanix-announces-vision-for-paas-solutions-and-new-capabilities-for-hybrid-multicloud.
