It is the end of an era: NOS weatherman Gerrit Hiemstra, a recognizable face to many, has announced that he will stop working for NOS after almost a quarter of a century. Hiemstra, who started at the NOS in December 1998, has plans to focus his attention as an entrepreneur on building climate-neutral buildings and the use of natural resources in construction. His last weather report will be broadcast in September. While Hiemstra is preparing for his new challenge, NOS is already looking for his successor.
During his time at the NOS, Hiemstra appeared on radio and television on average two days a week, and he also regularly contributed to NOS.nl and the NOS app. He started as a substitute and eventually became a permanent employee on a freelance basis.
Although Hiemstra was a beloved figure at NOS, he has expressed his desire to shift his focus to reducing greenhouse gases. He explains: “It remains a privilege to be part of the NOS and to contribute to informing Dutch society. So far I have mainly told and spoken a lot about climate change, but now I really want to do something about it.”
Giselle van Cann, editor-in-chief NOS Nieuws, paid tribute to Hiemstra and his craftsmanship: “Gerrit has become a fixed value for the viewer who brings the weather in the NOS Journaal without frills, and who has also been featured online and on social media in recent years. his knowledge about the climate strikes a chord with a new generation. We will miss Gerrit and his craftsmanship very much.”
