Apple registers logo for ‘xrOS’: this is what it means

Apple has registered a logo for ‘xrOS’, but what mysterious operating system is that, and what does it mean? We explain.

Apple xrOS

As mysterious as Apple wants to be, at some point brand names have to be registered, and then a secret is suddenly public. This also applies to ‘xrOS’, a name that has already been registered. The logo (wordmark) has now also been recorded.

xrOS is expected to be the operating system of the upcoming Apple Reality glasses. At first there were rumors that it would be called realityOS – but now all hints point to xrOS. By the way, ‘XR’ is the common term for mixed reality, or a mix of virtual reality (replacing reality) and augmented reality (adding to reality) – and let Apple’s glasses be a mixed reality device.

Lots of clues

There are many hints to Apple’s glasses in the description accompanying the captured logo. For example, the trademark is registered for ‘eyeglass frames’, ‘correcting lenses’, ‘head-mounted displays’ and many other glasses-related terms.

In addition, the logo was registered by ‘Deep Dive LLC’, an undercover name that Apple has used before. So everything points to Apple and its first mixed reality headset.

xrOS at WWDC 2023

Apple is expected to announce both the Apple Reality glasses and xrOS during WWDC 2023 – the biggest Apple event of the year. The event will take place on June 5.
