📸 Chiara Consonni is run over in Burgos, breaks four teeth and still finishes the stage

Striking incident at the start of the second stage in the Vuelta a Burgos. Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) was run over by a support car from another team shortly after signing the start list. The 23-year-old sprinter from Italy was left with a deep cut at the height of the chin and four broken teeth. The start was therefore delayed by half an hour.

She was immediately cared for on the spot by her team doctor and a few paramedics and was given plasters and painkillers. The doctors had, of course, strongly advised her to stop fighting, but Consonni did not heed that advice. She just took off and finished the stage. “It was one of my toughest days ever on a bike,” she wrote on Instagram.

After the finish, Consonni, who lives in Ponte San Pietro (Lombardy region), was met by an ambulance. A dentist stitched the wound to her chin and tried to straighten her teeth.

The Ronde van de Burgos was eventually won by Demi Vollering, after she lashed out unparalleled on the final day by destroying everyone on the very tough final climb Lagunas de Neila. She also won the second stage, after Lorena Wiebes was relegated. Wiebes did take the victory in the two other stages.
